Here's a listing of the more common types of headaches:
Migraine
Migraine headaches are the most severe reoccurring headaches. More common in females, they often run in families and can begin in childhood. Migraines can start with a visual change or some odd sensation in the body. The headaches increase until they are severe and the person must lie down in a dark room with no noise. They can rate as high as 10 on a pain scale of 0-10. They can last for days. Nausea and vomiting can occur with these headaches.
There are some variations of migraines such as "cluster headaches" or "migraine variants." Some people get organ or limb pain as the only symptom of a migraine.
Tension
Tension headaches are very common and are often in the front or back of the head. They can travel into the neck as well. These can be severe. They are due to changes in the musculature of the head and neck.
Sinus and Allergic
Sinus headaches occur in the forehead of cheek areas and are usually described as "pressure." These headaches arise from pressure build-up in the sinus cavities.
Chemical/Toxic
Chemical or toxic headaches are due to a chemical change in the body in response to something in the environment or something one ingests. The chemical changes can cause swelling in the body and perhaps the brain linings causing head pain. There may be blood flow changes creating the pain.
These headaches can be severe and may not respond to pain medication.
TMJ
TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint headaches arise from irritation of the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. Teeth clenching (which can be due to allergies), auto accident and jaw injuries as well as poor tooth alignment are the underlying reasons for TMJ headaches.
Blood sugar caused
A drop in blood sugar can create headaches.
Hormonal
Hormones from puberty through menopause (male and female) can trigger headaches.
Yeast caused
Yeast, also known as Candida can create chemical changes in the body as well as fatigue which leads to headaches. Women experience this more than men.
Adrenal fatigue
The adrenal glands are our stress glands and produce cortisone, adrenaline, blood sugar regulating hormones and sleep-regulating hormones. When they get fatigued, one can experience "sick headaches" or severe headaches that can be over the entire head. Theses generally do not respond to medication but do respond to adequate sleep.
